The day aims to raise awareness about intellectual property (IP) rights and its role in encouraging innovation and creativity along with reminding the importance of safeguarding intellectual property. The day was first celebrated by the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) in 2000.

On this occasion, the Foundation for Technology and Business Incubation (FTBI) organised a one-day awareness session today at FTBI Smart Seminar Hall, NIT Rourkela. Dr. Bijay Kumar Sahu {Senior Regional Manager & Program Head,

“Start ideating your simple thoughts by incubating yourselves and eventually getting a commercial identity with the help of IPR. Try to own what is yours as soon as possible as the world today is in a FastTrack mode. For example, we are still adjusting to the transformation of Industry 4.0 (Fourth Industrial Revolution),

but Industry 5.0 has already started. I thus encourage you all to demonstrate your ability to think of something new that can really disrupt the existing conventional technologies, procedures or system and secure it with Intellectual Property Rights.”

Delivering his inaugural remarks, Dr. Bijay Kumar Sahu {Senior Regional Manager & Program Head, WIPO-Technology Innovation Support Centre (TISC), NRDC} said, “We have to ensure that innovators and creators receive the recognition and reward they deserve for their contributions to human progress.

Their knowledge must be acknowledged. India holds 40th rank in the Global Innovation Index 2023 rankings and we have to elevate our position by leveraging technology & innovation accelerating the start-up ecosystem in our country. NIT Rourkela, known for its commitment to excellence in education and research has indeed recognised the significance of intellectual property in nurturing a culture of creations.

I am delighted that FTBI is providing collaborative opportunities for institutions and organisations to foster regional and local innovations.” Dr. Sahu later in the session elaborated on the “Role of Higher Educational Institutions in Intellectual Property and Sustainable Development Growth”.

GoI. Furthermore, the presence of more than 100 unicorns in India highlights the vibrancy, inclusivity, and dynamism of the country’s start-up ecosystem. Both central and state governments are increasingly prioritizing support for innovative ideas, and domestic as well as foreign investors are showing keen interest in backing the budding startups. It’s time young Indian minds embark on their entrepreneurial journeys with their unique ideas.”
